What Copilot actually gives you, in plain terms.

Copilot is an AI layer over the Microsoft 365 apps your people already open, grounded in the content they are already allowed to see, and governed by the controls you already run.

  • Inside the apps people already use

    Copilot works across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, drafting, summarising, analysing and catching people up on what they missed.

  • Copilot Chat as the front door

    A chat surface on web, desktop and mobile for questions, drafting and research, available to eligible Microsoft 365 users without an added per seat cost.

  • Grounded in your own content

    Responses are grounded in Microsoft Graph, so Copilot reasons over the mail, files, meetings and chats the signed in person is already permitted to see.

  • Work and web grounding

    Answers can draw on tenant content, on the open web, or on both, so the same assistant covers internal policy and external research.

  • Permissions carried through

    Data access is always scoped to the signed in user's permissions and stays inside the Microsoft 365 service boundary. Your content is not used to train the foundation models.

  • Purview, audit and residency

    Sensitivity labels, encryption, audit and Microsoft Purview controls apply to Copilot activity, and data residency commitments follow your tenant.

  • Extended with connectors and agents

    Copilot connectors bring line of business content into the index, and agents add specialist skills for a particular team or process.

  • Two ways to pay

    A per seat Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, or usage based billing in Copilot Credits for Copilot Chat, SharePoint agents and Copilot Studio consumption.

Custom agents

Agents built for the tasks your people repeat every week.

Copilot answers questions. An agent takes the routine work off the desk entirely: triggered by an event or a schedule, grounded in your own sources, acting through connectors and flows, and escalating to a person when it should.

  • Microsoft documents declarative agents and custom engine agents, and the choice sets how much control you take on.

    • Declarative agents add instructions, knowledge and actions on top of the existing Copilot orchestrator and models
    • Custom engine agents give full control of orchestration, models and data integration
    • Agent Builder covers lightweight cases inside Microsoft 365 Copilot
    • Copilot Studio covers the richer builds, with the Microsoft 365 Agents SDK and Agents Toolkit for pro code
    • Most repetitive task agents start declarative and only move on when they genuinely need to

Where this usually starts

  1. Supplier and invoice queries: An agent answers status questions from your finance system and raises the exception only when the answer is not there.
  2. Internal service desk: HR, IT and policy questions answered from SharePoint, with a ticket created automatically when a person is needed.
  3. Order and case updates: Scheduled agents check Dynamics 365 records and push the exceptions to the person who owns them.
  4. Document heavy admin: Incoming documents read, checked against the record and filed, with a human step where confidence is low.
  5. Onboarding and offboarding: Event triggered agents run the checklist across systems so nothing depends on someone remembering.
  6. Reporting routines: The weekly pack assembled and circulated on a schedule, with the commentary drafted for review.

We scope each agent against a real task and a real measure, so you can tell whether it earned its keep before you build the next one.
