Microsoft Power BI is a collection of tools and services that enables interactive visualisations and dashboards. Power BI is the tool that many users choose when they want to create interactive visualisations and self-service reports from Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations data.

Power BI can connect to multiple data sources, both on premises and in the cloud, to create combined reports and dashboards, securely digest and present key business data from a collection of sources. Data can be accessed using a mobile application called Power BI Mobile.

Integrating Power BI

Alongside Dynamics 365, Power BI is able to turn data into visualisations, dashboards and self-service reports, that give you accurate, real-time readings of your critical business statistics. How Power BI is integrated along with other technologies and Dynamics 365 is explained in diagram below.

Power BI reports can be developed in Excel or Power BI Desktop. These are 3 Excel add-ins which can be used for it.

Power Query – used to source data from Dynamics 365 for Operations and many other data sources. Power Query lets you build compelling data mash-ups that provide reporting across data sources.

Microsoft SQL Server Power Pivot for Excel – enables data modeling for power users. Power Pivot takes advantage of an in-memory engine that is built into Excel, and that enables large amounts of data to be stored and worked with very quickly.

Power View - lets users build interactive visualisations in Excel by using data that is loaded and modelled by Power Query and Power Pivot. Power View reports can be used on a stand-alone basis, so that you don’t have to upload reports that are for personal use, to

Dynamics 365 Reporting - is able to integrate with other popular Microsoft authoring tools such as Excel, and Power BI Desktop. Dynamics 365 reporting is publishable on, and view-able across mobile devices for heightened levels of collaboration and visibility. These dashboard outputs can be translated into interactive visuals that closely show the efficiencies of your business processes.

Embedding Power BI visuals in the Dynamics 365 For Operations Client can be used on its own as a reporting and dashboard solution for your organisation or business unit. However, users can also pin reports from to Dynamics 365 for Operations workspaces and pages to provide contextual insights that are related to business operations. Power BI tiles that are pinned to the Dynamics 365 for Operations client provide insightful visuals at a glance. They also let users open for interactive analysis.
